Kitchen Modeling – Flooring
Kitchen Modeling – Flooring
If you want to give your kitchen a fresh, new look, changing out the flooring can make a huge difference. The great thing about changing flooring is that you can replace it at any time. In other words, it can be a stand-alone project or something you do as a part of changing the entire kitchen. Regardless, your kitchen will look amazing and the value of your home will benefit.
In most cases, a new floor can be placed over an old floor as long as the sub-flooring is in good condition. Just keep in mind that if the flooring will be connecting to other rooms, there would be issues with imbalance. Therefore, while this is an option, the better choice would be to tear out the old floor and have new flooring installed, especially if the new floor is hardwood.

Passive house - Home In The Middle of Nature
This lovely Passive House estate was designed by Dutch architects Sluijmer & Van Leeuwen and is currently owned by the Utrecht Landscape Foundation. The villa represented a challenge from the very start.
Building something in the middle of nature is not always easy, because the resources are sometimes scarce. This is why a huge creative effort was needed in order to create this fantastic design with all the utilities included in a place surrounded by “185 hectares of forests and agricultural land”. Still, everything turned out great. The exterior design is something else and the interiors are beautiful and spacious. Have a pick at results in the pictures below!

Shabby Chic – Stylish and Sloppy for Active Families
One of the current trends that is often heard of but may not be fully understood is the concept of “Shabby Chic” or a stylish way of using and displaying older or worn and used items that creates an ambiance all of its own.
The word “Shabby” refers to items that show signs of wear are threadbare or damaged in some way or just substandard or of mediocre quality while the word “chic” refers to items that are within current fashion trends and represent a sophisticated stylish manner.
At first glance these words appear to be in direct contradiction, which is actually the heart of the style – to use low cost or used items in combination with each other in such a way to create an up-to-date and fashionable room without it appearing to be ‘made up’ or too fancy to enjoy.
Style and Color
The current standard of shabby chic actually started from existing eclectic homes in Great Britain which held several generations of older antiques and draperies / furniture that seemed to mesh into a cohesive whole due to the similar nature of their use and occupants personal preferences in style and color.
After seeing examples of these homes some decorators began to deliberately cultivate certain items such as worn antiques or flaking door panels into their designs until an entire decorating strategy based on these types of pieces and juxtaposition of inexpensive new and worn old goods exploded on the scene as the latest thing in interior decorating.
Shabby Chic doesn’t necessarily require you to use pre-owned or worn out items however – a shabby chic style can be created using all new and beautiful items by following a few rules about how to mix different styles and patterns to create the appearance of an eclectic mix of items that may have been found or relocated from different areas of the home.
The Step by Step Guide to Shabby Chic
Tips on various techniques and styles that you can use are found on many websites now, but some general rules of thumb that you should adhere to when trying to utilize this technique include:
- Use a mix of different materials and furniture styles that compliment each other but are obvious different.
- Make creative use of texture and patterns that are not typical but fit with the ‘tone’ of the room or compliment some other element in use in the room.
- Try to use neutral tones with darker accents for main items, and keep your accent pieces from distracting too much – the idea is to create an eclectic mix of elements not sharp contrasts!
- Use fringes and skirts as well as varying fabrics whenever possible.
- Use lots of whites and pale tones for larger pieces and draperies when possible.
Faded chintz material, old paintwork and ordinary but stylish pieces are the heart of what makes for ‘good’ shabby chic. When it comes to paintings and artwork the older and more unassuming the better, provided it is not velvet Elvises!
Shabby Chic as an Elegant Victorian Home
The key is to be low key and have good taste but to use that taste with everyday items rather then expensive one of a kind elements. The end result of a correctly executed shabby chic decoration is to create an elegant but lived-in room rather then a cute modern Victorian or country farmhouse.
If done properly it will not look like you went to the junk yard or a yard sale, but rather have carefully collected cherished pieces for many years that all reflect a similar taste and theme but may or may not be the most expensive or newest expressions of that theme available.
In its infancy shabby chic was actually rather extravagant and artful but has began to fall more into a comfort zone, taking inspiration more from the American shaker movement and the French Chateaus where plain and simple quality was the key elements.
Many items used in this style of decorating feature heavy layers of pain or obviously worn or damaged areas and often are imitated by damaging existing coats with chains, sandpaper or by painting and then hand-rubbing them to remove bits of paint.
The fabrics used in the movement are normally cotton and linen and lean towards older French patterns, worn or bleached pastels and stained cloth. In fact staining fabric with tea is one trick many interior decorators use to give a shabby chic element to items that are ‘too new’ to fit into their design concepts.
A carefully torn map stained lightly with tea can make an excellent table showpiece for instance, where a new fresh map of the continent would simply appear out of place.
Whether you are an old hand to these techniques or just graduating from modern bachelor shabby chic is a design concept whose time has come around again – for the first time.
Tropical Chic – Heading to the Beach for Style
We see the word ‘Chic’ a lot in design which is not surprising since it means ‘well put together’ or stylish which is after all the heart of interior design and decorating. When used with natural-themed styles such as ‘tropical’ which first brings to mind bamboo huts and little to no furnishings and accessories however it may bring a quick smile to one’s face – yet there is no better term for what has now become known as the “Tropical Chic” style
Influenced by the island-themed bamboo and minimalist styles of native tribes in tropical islands and jungles this style is not about island living but about invoking a feeling of the raw and powerful nature such living characterizes. Its bold use of animal prints in juxtaposition to the use of simple and elegant colors and textures helps to create an adult playground that is lush yet simple and not reminiscent of the jungle-themes of the early 70’s!
Most often seen in living and great rooms due to the powerful nature of mood this style invokes the Tropical chic style can however be modified to work in bathrooms or bedrooms as well.Featuring comfortable upholstered furniture with long lines and a casual restful look are important to creating the exciting but restful retreat that this design style is going for.
At the heart of any tropical design style is a heavy reliance on natural materials and colors to set a tone against which a theme and color palette that will invoke a feeling of being in a jungle or natural environment can be achieved.Primary in setting this tone is the use of neutral color tones such as camel, tan, beige, ivory, soft gold and yellows combined with deep brown and greens that range from light sage to dark avocado or even black are the basic color palette.Accenting these base colors are dark shades of brown or blacks, or muted reds.
These colors when used effectively help create the feeling of nature and the wild that is desired, while carefully chosen furnishing and accent pieces bring the elegant and modern ‘chic’ attributes to the room.
When choosing fabrics, whether to be used on the large overstuffed and noticeably comfortable furniture (which is often made of wicker, iron, rattan or bamboo) or on accent pillows try to choose designs patterned in leaf or jungle print styles bearing in mind that your choice must be soft and lush and fit with the color tones of the rest of the room – part of Tropical CHIC is to keep consistency for a more comfortable feeling rather then jarring the senses in an overwhelming pattern of jungle prints and clashing styles.
Recommended materials for larger pieces like couches or ottomans would be neutral color solid chenille’s and if desired can be based around a motif such as a tropical jungle look, animal designs etc.
Pillows should not have fringes and should be little ‘works of art’ themselves while maintaining simple square or rectangular shapes.
Most wooden pieces and flooring will work with the tropical chic look, especially with the use of a table throw or animal skin when necessary.
For most pieces, especially the larger ones using lighter colors works better although careful use of darker and exotic woods such as rattan or ebony, while best used to add weight to tables lamps or feet of furnishings can add a nice bit of dramatic focus to a room without losing sight of the basic premise.
Accents can be ivory or wooden carvings, African or tropical style masks and weapons and be displayed on shelving, hanging on walls or even on pedestals. One important element necessary to create a proper feeling of being near nature is to use large plants placed where they are visible from the comfortable seating, as well as liberal use of texture such as grass cloth and bamboo.Any artwork can be made to work, but be certain that the colors and subject matter match the color and tone of the room to help complete and not compete with the look you are trying to achieve.
With proper attention to color tones and choosing the right accents a Tropical Chic style is easy to achieve and can help create a vibrant and dynamic space in which to relax or play.
